- 1/2 cup buttermilk (120ml)
- 1 cup peeled and diced apples (about 1 large apple)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100g) for caramel sauce
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (56g) for caramel sauce
- 1/4 cup heavy cream (60ml) for caramel sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract for caramel sauce
- Pinch of salt for caramel sauce
Instructions:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon.
- Cut in the chilled butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Fold in diced apples gently until evenly distributed.
- Turn dough out onto a floured surface; knead gently until smooth.
- Pat the dough into a circle, about 1-inch thick.
- Cut the dough into wedges and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt sugar until it turns amber in color.
- Carefully add butter, stirring until melted.
- Gradually pour in heavy cream, stirring continuously until smooth. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract and salt.
- Allow scones to cool slightly, then drizzle with warm caramel sauce before serving.
