Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter or margarine, softened
- 1 cup water (adjust as needed)
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using). Mix well to ensure even distribution of the ingredients.
- Incorporate Butter: Add the softened butter into the flour mixture. Use your fingers or a pastry cutter to rub in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add Water: Gradually add water while mixing with your other hand or a wooden spoon until it forms a soft dough. You may need more or less water depending on humidity and flour brand.
- Knead Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 5 minutes until smooth but not sticky.
- Shape Dough: Divide the dough into equal portions (about 6-8 pieces). Shape each piece into a round ball and then flatten slightly with your palm.
- Prepare Baking Sheet: Place flattened rounds onto an ungreased baking sheet ensuring they are spaced apart to allow for rising during baking.
- Bake: Bake in preheated oven for approximately 20–25 minutes or until they turn golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool Down: Remove from oven and let cool slightly before serving warm with cheese, meats, or curry dishes!
