Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold, cut into small pieces)
- 3/4 cup water (adjust as needed)
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper if desired.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Whisk together until well mixed.
- Add the cold butter pieces to the dry mixture. Using your fingers or a pastry cutter, blend until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add water to the mixture while stirring gently with your hand or a fork until it comes together into a soft dough. The dough should not be sticky; add more flour if necessary.
- Turn out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 2 minutes until smooth but still soft.
- Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thick using a rolling pin. You can cut it into rounds using a biscuit cutter or just shape it into squares/rectangles with your knife.
- Arrange the shaped dough onto the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each piece for expansion during baking.
