Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (170g) steel cut oats
  • 4 cups (950ml) water
  • 1 cup (240ml) milk (or dairy-free alternative, e.g., almond or oat milk)
  • ½ teaspoon (2.5g) salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15g) brown sugar (optional for sweetness)
  • Fresh fruits (berries, banana slices, or diced apples)
  • Nuts (walnuts, almonds, or pecans)
  • Honey or maple syrup
  • Spices (cinnamon or nutmeg)

Instructions:

  1. Grease the slow cooker with a bit of butter or cooking spray.
  2. In the slow cooker, combine steel cut oats, water, milk, salt, and brown sugar (if using).
  3. Cover and set the slow cooker to low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
  4. Stir occasionally, if possible. The oats are done when they are creamy and tender.
  5. Once cooked, stir the oats, adjust the consistency with more milk if desired, and spoon into bowls.
  6. Finish with your favorite toppings for added flavor and texture.
