Ingredients:
- 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/2 cup buttermilk or whole milk

- Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, cornstarch, and nutmeg (if using).
- Spread the apple mixture evenly in the bottom of the baking dish.
- In another bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the melted butter and buttermilk until just combined; do not overmix.
- Pour the topping evenly over the apples, spreading it out gently.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Let cool slightly before serving warm, preferably with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
