Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk or whole milk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, cornstarch, and nutmeg (if using).
  3. Spread the apple mixture evenly in the bottom of the baking dish.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the melted butter and buttermilk until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Pour the topping evenly over the apples, spreading it out gently.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving warm, preferably with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
