Ingredients:

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of salt
  • 8 slices of thick-cut bread (like brioche or challah)
  • Unsalted butter for frying
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Mini marshmallows (optional)
  • Cocoa powder or grated chocolate for dusting (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a saucepan, heat the milk, cream, and sugar over medium heat until warm. Stir in chocolate chips until melted and smooth.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, vanilla extract, and salt. Gradually mix in the warm chocolate mixture.
  3. Place slices of bread in a baking dish and pour the custard mixture over them, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Let it rest for 5 minutes to absorb the custard.
  4. Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and add butter. Cook soaked bread slices until golden brown on each side, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  5. Plate the French toast and top with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or a dusting of cocoa powder.
