Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (175g) steel-cut oats
  • 4 cups (950ml) water (or a combination of water and milk/plant-based milk)
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt (or to taste)
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon brown sugar (or maple syrup/honey)
  • Optional: cinnamon
  • Optional: vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. In a dry saucepan over medium heat, toast the steel-cut oats for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until fragrant. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  2. Pour the water (or water/milk combination) into the saucepan. Add the salt. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 25-30 minutes, or until the oats are tender and most of the liquid is absorbed. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Check for doneness. The oats should be creamy but still have a slight chew. Add more liquid if the oats become too dry before they are cooked through.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in any optional add-ins, such as brown sugar, cinnamon, or vanilla extract.
  6. Serve hot and top with your favorite toppings.
