Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, chopped (about 1 cup, 150g)
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped (about 1 cup, 150g)
- 1.5 pounds (680g) ground beef
- 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) black pepper
- 1 teaspoon (5g) garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) onion powder
- 1 (15 ounce/425g) can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup (120ml) ketchup
- 1/4 cup (60ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) yellow mustard
- 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon (15ml) baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) salt
- 1/2 cup (113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
- 3/4 cup (180ml) milk
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese, divided (reserve some for topping)
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Chop the onion and bell pepper.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
- Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in milk until just combined.
- Pour the Sloppy Joe mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
- Drop spoonfuls of biscuit dough evenly over the Sloppy Joe mixture. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese over the biscuits.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through. Let cool slightly before serving. This Sloppy Joe Casserole recipe is easy to make.
