Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped (about 1 cup, 150g)
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped (about 1 cup, 150g)
  • 1.5 pounds (680g) ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon (5g) garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) onion powder
  • 1 (15 ounce/425g) can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) ketchup
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) yellow mustard
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) milk
  • 1 cup (100g) shredded cheddar cheese, divided (reserve some for topping)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Chop the onion and bell pepper.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  4. Stir in salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and mustard. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until slightly thickened.
  5. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in milk until just combined.
  6. Pour the Sloppy Joe mixture into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese evenly over the meat mixture.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of biscuit dough evenly over the Sloppy Joe mixture. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar cheese over the biscuits.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through. Let cool slightly before serving. This Sloppy Joe Casserole recipe is easy to make.
