Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) whole wheat breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup (15 g) fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 24 oz (680 g) marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • Dash of red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, applesauce, egg, garlic, parsley, oregano, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; avoid overmixing.
  2. Scoop out the mixture and roll into balls (about 1.5 inches in diameter). Optionally, place meatballs on a baking sheet and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes for better shape during cooking.
  3. Pour marinara sauce into the bottom of the slow cooker, spreading it evenly.
  4. Carefully place meatballs into the slow cooker, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours, until meatballs are cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F / 75°C).
  6. Gently remove meatballs from sauce and serve hot with extra sauce on top.
