Ingredients:
- 1 lb (450 g) lean ground turkey
- 1/2 cup (50 g) whole wheat breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup (30 g) grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) unsweetened applesauce
- 1 large egg
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup (15 g) fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 24 oz (680 g) marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
- Dash of red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground turkey, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, applesauce, egg, garlic, parsley, oregano, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; avoid overmixing.
- Scoop out the mixture and roll into balls (about 1.5 inches in diameter). Optionally, place meatballs on a baking sheet and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes for better shape during cooking.
- Pour marinara sauce into the bottom of the slow cooker, spreading it evenly.
- Carefully place meatballs into the slow cooker, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce.
- Cover and cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours, until meatballs are cooked through (internal temperature should reach 165°F / 75°C).
- Gently remove meatballs from sauce and serve hot with extra sauce on top.
