Ingredients:

  • 6 medium apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn), peeled, cored, and sliced (900g / 2 lbs)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (25g / 1 oz)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar (50g / 1.75 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15ml / 0.5 fl oz)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces (30g / 1 oz)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g / 4.25 oz)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (40g / 1.5 oz)
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar (100g / 3.5 oz)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes (113g / 4 oz)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (30g / 1 oz)

Instructions:

  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  2. Combine sliced apples with flour, sugars, spices, and lemon juice in a large bowl. Toss to coat evenly. Dot with small pieces of butter.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and nuts (if using).
  4. Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Pour the apple filling into the baking dish. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling, around 40-45 minutes.
  7. Let cool slightly before serving.
