Ingredients:
- 1 cup (120g) ground cinnamon
- 1 cup (120g) applesauce (unsweetened)
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) school glue (like Elmer's)
- Icing sugar (optional)
- Water (optional)
- Food coloring (optional)
- Sprinkles (optional)
- String or ribbon for hanging
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground cinnamon, applesauce, and glue. Mix until a dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface (or a surface dusted with cinnamon) and knead briefly until smooth. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more cinnamon. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to lowest setting 170-200°F (75-95°C). Roll the dough out to about ¼ inch (6mm) thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes.
- Using a straw or skewer, create a hole near the top of each ornament for hanging.
- Place the ornaments on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 1-3 hours, or until the ornaments are hard and dry (this depends on the thickness of the dough). Flip halfway through to ensure even drying. Alternatively, you can air-dry them for several days.
- Remove the ornaments from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- Once cool, decorate the cinnamon ornaments with icing, sprinkles, or other decorations. Let the decorations dry completely.
- Thread string or ribbon through the holes and hang the ornaments on your tree or anywhere you like!
