Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup red wine or balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped or 1 teaspoon dried
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped or 1 teaspoon dried
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch mixed with 2 tablespoons water (optional, for thickening)
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Pour in the red wine (or balsamic vinegar) and scrape the bottom of the pan to lift any browned bits. Cook for 2-3 minutes until slightly reduced.
- Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for 20-25 minutes until it thickens slightly and flavors meld.
- If a thicker sauce is desired, stir in the cornstarch mixture and simmer for an additional 2-3 minutes until thickened.
- Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as needed with salt and pepper.
- Remove from heat and serve warm over your favorite steak.
