Ingredients:

  • 1 cup (240ml) warm milk (105-115°F / 40-46°C)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon (6g) salt
  • ¼ cup (57g) shortening, melted (or softened butter)
  • 3 cups (360g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 2 tablespoons (30ml) melted butter (optional, for brushing)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted shortening and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, knead with a dough hook in a stand mixer for 5 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough to release the air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover the loaf pan with a clean towel and let rise in a warm place for 30 minutes to 1 hour, or until it has risen about an inch above the rim of the pan.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200°F (93°C).
  8. Remove the bread from the oven and brush the top with melted butter (optional). Let cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. This easy amish white bread will be the best you have.
